         Mission Statement

The Board of Deacons shall be spiritual leaders as well as being living examples of servants in the church in keeping with the biblical principals of the role of Diakonias (Ephesians 4:12) and shall be responsible for the organization and function of the worship services.  Members of the Board of Deacons shall set an example for worship and educational attendance, for gaining knowledge of the Lord and His Word and for dealing lovingly with other members.

            Membership

The Board of Deacons shall be comprised of five (5) active members of the congregation of Grace Lutheran Church.  Each member shall have regular attendance at worship, Holy Communion and Bible study in preparation for assuming the duties and responsibilities of the role of Deacon of the church.  Each shall be elected by the Voters’ Assembly as specified in the By-Laws to a term of two (2) years, with one-half of the members of the Board being elected in each successive year.

            Qualifications

The Deacon should not be a recent (within two (2) years prior to the nomination to the Board of Deacons unless this requirement is waived by the Board of Deacons) convert to the Lutheran Church, but one who is experienced in the faith and the Word of God.

The Deacon should demonstrate a love for the Lord and His Word by personal attendance at worship and Bible study.  The Deacon must be willing to spend any necessary time in preparation for and the supervision of the worship services.  The Deacon shall strive to live his life in the Way of the Lord.

            Meetings

Generally, the Deacons shall meet once a month, more often if necessary, or as directed by the Voters’ Assembly.  The Pastor and the Board shall determine regular meeting dates and times.  The Pastor, President or Chairman of Deacons or of two (2) members of the Board asking for the meeting may call special meetings.  Every member is to be notified in a timely manner of meetings.

            Organization

The Board shall select from among its members a Chairman for the year.

            Duties and Responsibilities

The primary role of the deacon will be in worship service organization and leadership.  They will recruit and train service team leaders as well as ushers, lay readers and acolytes.

Each Deacon will be responsible for a specific service and a fifth deacon will be responsible for special service and assisting and filling in for other deacon’s as needed.  If additional services are added, Deacons will be added accordingly.  While the deacons will be responsible for the overall organization of their respective service, they will raise service leaders up from within the congregation to assist them at the services.
